I find myself going between 3 or 4 different speaker systems and environments to get the full picture.

This is half the battle when doing some final mixing and mastering (i'll use the term mastering loosely to mean simple finalizing for demo or internet publication). For awhile I had a bad monitoring system and when I listen to tracks/mixes on did on those now, I wanna puke LOLĭefinately not a silly question. Of course all this depends on having good /trustable monitoring system, otherwise it won't matter. I even roll off around 40Hz generally, anyway - just to prevent too much 'down there', and sometimes I pull out (attenuate) in the 150-250 range (narrower Q usually). But EQ and compression really make a difference when used well. So much depends on the sound/harmonic content/style, etc. There's one track I worked on that I actually rolled off a LOT at 250HZ (believe it or not) and it still fit in the mix and sounded like a solid bass. There are lots of information "out there" on this subject, but I would say you probably need to dig into EQ more and understand the relationship between bass and other instruments (especially Kick).Ĭompression and EQ are critical and take a bit of learning, of course.īut - there are some bass sounds and basses that need STEEP rolling off on the bottom to fit in a track. I think I'll just reduce it again and bounce all the tracks again and then listen to it in my car again to see if it's ok. It doesn't seem like it needs compression. It's clear the bass is between 40 and 80 a lot of the time.Īnyway, I'm struggling to get better at it. It's a bit of a silly question, but is there some guide as to what the music might look like in the analyst ? Below 40 it gets louder to 20. until I burn the mix and listen to it in the car. I've made this mistake over and over again. I suppose I'll just remix again, reducing the bass. When I look at the analyzer, the bass (between 40 and 80) is kicking a little higher than the loudest of the other frequencies. When I mix using my in house stereo, or play back on other stereos, it sounds fine. When I play it back in the car, the bass sounds exceptionally loud.
